Each eagle is created individually,
more unique than a bronze, where only one is made
and the rest are cast from the same mold and reproduced
over and over. The processes used in our studio are so
intricate that the government issued patents,
based on their uniqueness, to protect not only the birds,
but also the procedures necessary to create the birds.
Every eagle is made from twelve different species of feathers,
from eight different countries. The feathers have to be a
certain size to match live Eagle feathers; they must be a
certain color to facilitate proper dying. Just an example
of the intricacy of the process: prior to dying, the oil
must be removed from the feather, as dye will run off of
an oiled feather just as water runs off a duck's back. The
feathers are given an acid bath with an exact chemical
mixture at an exact temperature
and exact agitation to avoid “melting” the
feathers. Then the process must be reversed to return the
oil to the feathers, another exacting procedure.
After the feathers are processed, each one must be handled
separately through seven different steps: sorting, cutting,
steaming, ironing, tipping, shaping, and sewing. The eyes,
the beak, and the feet are all made by hand. The mounts,
and even the crating, are handled by special process.
Because each eagle is individually created and crafted with
the process discussed above, our replicas are produced on
a very limited basis. Less than 40 birds were produced last
year. The limited nature of these replicas only enhances
their uniqueness.
